Volunteer Training Summit Information

Classes are Available in a Number of Scouting Subjects

The Volunteer Training Summit offers courses in a wide variety of Scouting areas relevant to Scouting Volunteers, no matter which part of Scouting you’re involved with or what position in the organization you’re registered.  You can take classes related to the position you’re registered in, or you can take classes to discover other parts of Scouting you might be interested in the future. There are also classes to help you with new ideas, fun fellowship, trips/tricks, outdoor activities, skills, and much more!  There is something for everyone!

It’s also a great opportunity to expand your Scouting network through meeting and talking with great Scouters from all over Baltimore Area Council and from other Councils, as well.

Registration for 2024 Volunteer Training Summit and College of Commissioner Science

Recognition for Attending is Available

Scouters taking classes at the Baltimore Area Council’s Volunteer Training Summit can earn Certificates acknowledging their accomplishments.  The Certificates are awarded for attending classes and performing a few other requirements.  The Certificates available the requirements to complete them are as follows:

Basic VTS Certificate: Attend 7 classes at the BAC VTS.

Intermediate VTS Training Certificate: Obtain BAC Basic VTS Certificate, Obtain Training Award or Key for your position, Recruit one new person to Scouting or to a new position in Scouting, Attend an additional 7 Classes at a BAC VTS

Advanced VTS Training Certificate: Obtain BAC Intermediate VTS Certificate, Recruit two new persons to Scouting or to a new positions in Scouting, Attend an additional 12 Classes at a BAC VTS, including DOC 614, and complete an approved Project or Paper.

Fellow VTS Honor:  Obtain a VTS Advanced Training Certificate, attend an additional 15 classes, develop and teach a new class at BAC VTS.

The Volunteer Training Summit was previously called the University of Scouting (UoS).  Recognition in the UoS was with degrees: Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate Degrees.  If a participant earned a Bachelor Degree from a Baltimore Area Council University of Scouting and wishes to continue with the Degree recognition, we will honor that request and allow them to continue working towards a Master’s and Doctorate.

Volunteer Training Summit Leadership

The lead for the Volunteer Training Summit and College of Commissioner Science is Carl Drew, the current Chancellor.  Carl is well experienced in training, include a BS in Secondary Education from Penn State.  He staffed two Wood Badge courses and taught at this event for over 5 years.  Carl has a Doctorate in Commissioner Science and received the Fellow Award.

Every Scouting Subject Area in the VTS has a lead person called a Dean.  For the 2024 VTS, they are:
