As we enter into Scout Anniversary month and celebrate Scouting’s 116th birthday, I found myself considering what is the value of Scouting? Or, I guess a better question might be, what would our communities look like without Scouting? If you were ever in Scouting or are involved today, you have seen the positive impact that the Scouting program has on the lives of the more than 11,000 youth we serve in Central Maryland. In addition to developing good citizens and our future community leaders, Scouting provides a lasting impact on our communities.
One of many measures of the Scouting program is the number of youth who achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Only 4% of all Scouts reach this pinnacle. A key requirement of earning the Eagle Scout rank is to identify, plan, recruit others, and execute a service project for the community or nonprofit organization.
The impact of Eagle Scout service projects is nothing short of extraordinary. In completing their projects, 400 Eagle Scouts recruited 4,439 helpers to serve alongside them, generating 55,464 service hours and nearly half a million dollars in value for our communities.”
Happy 116th Anniversary to the Scouting program in America. It’s clear that through the work of our Scouts and dedicated volunteers, our communities are a better place because of Scouting.
