A strong Scouting program—whether a Cub Scout Pack or a Scouts BSA Troop—thrives on consistent, intentional actions that support growth all year long. In the Baltimore Area Council, we follow the 3R Approach: Reach, Recruit, and Retain, ensuring every family has the opportunity to experience the adventure and value of Scouting.
As we move into February and March, these months offer key opportunities to strengthen family engagement, support smooth transitions, and position your Unit for a successful spring recruitment season. Below is a combined guide outlining year‑round membership tasks, followed by targeted action items for both Packs and Troops.
Year Round Monthly Membership Tasks (All Units)
To stay responsive, visible, and welcoming, every Unit should maintain these ongoing practices:
- Inform families with upcoming expirations about the renewal process
- Call or text inactive families
- Check Invitation Manager 2–3 times per week
- Post on social media twice per week
- Encourage families to share your Unit’s posts to expand community reach
These steady habits ensure families remain informed and engaged while keeping your Unit visible to prospective members.
February & March Tasks for Packs
Focusing on family involvement and retention is key for Cub Scout Packs during this season:
✔ Conduct the Family Talent Survey
Identify adults who are interested in supporting your Pack’s program—whether through skills, leadership, or special talents.
✔ Coordinate Arrow of Light (AOL) Transfers
Work closely with nearby Troops to ensure smooth transitions for AOL Scouts preparing to bridge.
✔ Conduct a Family Experience Survey
Gather feedback to better understand what families love and where improvements can be made.
These steps strengthen family connection and prepare your Pack for the spring recruitment window.
February & March Tasks for Troops
Troops should focus on outreach, transition support, and showcasing their program:
✔ Plan a Unit Open House
Highlight your Troop’s adventures, skills, and community to prospective Scouts and families.
✔ Create a Facebook Event & Invite Baltimore Scouting as a Cohost
Cohosting expands visibility and increases engagement, helping more families discover your Troop.
✔ Conduct the Troop Resource Survey
Find out which adults have skills, tools, or time to contribute to the Troop’s success.
✔ Coordinate AOL Transfers from Packs
Collaborate with local Packs to welcome new Scouts and ensure a positive crossover experience.
✔ Host Your Unit Open House
Demonstrate what makes your Troop unique—hands‑on activities, Scouts’ achievements, and leadership opportunities.
✔ Follow Up with Open House Attendees
Timely, personal follow‑up significantly increases joining likelihood.
✔ Conduct a Family Experience Survey
Use this feedback to enhance communication, program quality, and family involvement.
Membership growth isn’t built on a single recruitment event. It is the result of consistent, meaningful actions taken throughout the year. By focusing on the February and March tasks above, your Pack or Troop will stay visible, responsive, and welcoming as we head into spring, setting the stage for strong recruitment and long‑term retention.
