Scouts Read Sacred Texts Worldwide is an event during the week leading up to May 7, 2026 to encourage youth to read their sacred texts in conjunction with the U.S. National Day of Prayer. It aligns with the values, principles, and spiritual aims of Scouting.
- It supports the Scout Oath commitment to Duty to God
- Encourages personal reflection consistent with Scouting America principles
- Respects each Scout’s family and faith tradition
- May be completed individually, with family, or as a unit activity
- Requires no religious instruction by the unit leader
In 2025, 5,680 Scouts and youth participated in Scouts Read Sacred Texts, a 54% increase over the first year in 2024. There were 2,365 total hours of reading sacred texts, a 275% increase over 2024. In 2025, 43 U.S. states and 14 international locations participated. As of January 2nd, 1582 youth were registered for 2026!
This year, the invitation has been broadened beyond Scouting organizations to include all youth groups that share a faith in God. As a result, we welcome participants from 4-H, American Heritage Girls, Knights of Columbus, Campfire, Girl Scouts, and more! The National Day of Prayer falls on May 7, 2026, so participants will read sacred texts throughout that week. We invite all Scouts. Scouters and youth-serving organizations to join us!
