Conservation at Broad Creek

The Conservation Committee has been busy at Broad Creek!  We have been removing invasive species in Windy Hills in Camp Spencer, maintaining trees planted around Camp Saffran, and last spring we planted the old Obstacle Course in Camp Oest with trees we grew ourselves in the caged grow-out station outside the Saffran Nature Lodge.  With the help of several OA crews during the fall, we installed water bars and performed erosion mitigation on the red trail across the road from the Saffran entrance.

Every third Saturday of the month, we are at Broad Creek leading conservation service projects for Scouts and Scouters who are interested.  If you know a Star Scout who needs conservation service hours to reach the Life rank, please send them our way (with an adult to help supervise).  There is no cost, but we do ask that folks sign up ahead of time so that we can plan the right projects for the right number of people: https://scoutingevent.com/220-26conservation

There is a new Broad Creek Naturalist Guide available that will guide Scouts on hikes around the Saffran Nature Trail, the Quarry, and the Hemlocks, as well as provide additional fun nature-related activities.  Scouts who complete the requirements listed in the front of the booklet can receive a free patch to recognize their accomplishment!  The Broad Creek Naturalist Guide is available for just $1 at the Broad Creek Trading Post.

And we are always looking for more volunteers!  If you have professional experience in land/resource management or environmental field, the Conservation Committee would love to be able to tap into your expertise.  Or if you love Broad Creek and want to spend a little more time doing conservation-related service there, please get in touch.  We would be happy to have you!
