Letter from the Scout Executive: February 2025

This month, the Boy Scouts of America celebrates its 115th anniversary. It’s incredible to reflect on the millions of youth who have participated in Scouting, gaining lifelong skills and experiences along the way.

As I look back on my 40 years as a Scouting professional, I’ve witnessed many changes in the program. This month also marks another significant milestone—the Boy Scouts of America will officially adopt the public-facing name Scouting America, while its corporate name remains unchanged. This long-overdue shift reaffirms our commitment to welcoming the entire family into the Scouting movement.

Speaking of change, eighteen years ago, the Baltimore City Scout Shop relocated across the street to the Steiff Silver Building, often causing confusion for volunteers. We are excited to announce that the Baltimore Scout Shop will return to the Scout Service Center later this year. Renovations are currently underway in the west wing, transforming it into a full-service store featuring both BSA essentials and custom items from the Baltimore Area Council and Broad Creek. A special thank you to Brian Frels, Principal at Arium/AE, for generously donating the architectural renovation plans.

Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation is also undergoing exciting improvements! Three new restroom and shower facilities are under construction, a $2 million investment that will significantly enhance the camp experience. Additionally, this spring, Broad Creek will host the Maryland Arborist Association’s annual Day of Service, during which six to eight tree service companies will donate their expertise to remove hazardous trees and assist with general cleanup. We’re thrilled to partner with the Maryland Arborist Association on this vital project.

A great summer camp experience depends on three key factors: staff, program, and food/facilities. We’ve been making significant strides in all these areas to ensure an exceptional summer at Broad Creek. This year, we aim to award $30,000 in Camp Staff College Scholarships, reinforcing our commitment to recruiting and retaining outstanding staff who elevate the camp experience.

If your Troop or Pack hasn’t yet considered Broad Creek for Scout Summer Camp or Cub Scout Resident Camp, now is the time! There’s no better place for adventure, learning, and camaraderie. “It’s time to come home to Broad Creek!”

For any organization to remain relevant, it must continue to evolve. We are committed to making meaningful changes that support and strengthen Scouting in the Baltimore Area Council.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or ideas, I’d love to hear from you.
