Education on Wheels: Kariton Klasrum for Filipino Children in Need

A Pushcart for Education: Empowering Filipino Children Through Scouting | Eagle Scout Service Project from Aaliyah Perez

The Philippines, known for its stunning landscapes and rich culture, is home to hardworking and resilient people. However, many face significant challenges, including poverty, homelessness, unemployment, and hunger. These hardships are especially detrimental to children in remote areas, where access to education is often limited.

Recognizing this need, Aaliyah Perez chose to address the issue through her Eagle Scout Project. From February to June 2023, she worked tirelessly to create a kariton klasrum – a “pushcart classroom” designed to bring education to children in underserved Filipino communities. With support from her Scouting troop in the United States and a Scouting unit in the Philippines, Aaliyah transformed her vision into a meaningful reality.

What is a Kariton Klasrum?

A kariton klasrum is a simple pushcart made from scrap materials like wood and metal. It serves as an Alternative Learning System dedicated to teaching Filipino street children. Aaliyah’s project involved building one such pushcart and equipping it with essential school supplies. This mobile classroom provides greater access to education for children in hard-to-reach areas, including mountainous and coastal regions.

The Journey and Impact

On June 17, 2023, Aaliyah donated the kariton klasrum to the Balon Youth Alliance for Children (BYAC) in Mariveles, Bataan, Philippines. The organization, which is committed to empowering underprivileged youth, welcomed the donation with gratitude. The pushcart Aaliyah designed was more lightweight and durable than BYAC’s previous version, enabling their members to teach more efficiently and reach a greater number of children.

While Aaliyah initially set out to create and donate one kariton klasrum along with school supplies, the overwhelming support from her community allowed her to exceed this goal. She successfully provided two pushcart classrooms and three boxes of school supplies to BYAC. The remaining funds were used to provide college scholarships for four underprivileged but deserving members of the organization, opening doors to new opportunities for their futures.

A Ripple Effect of Hope

The kariton klasrum symbolizes more than a physical pushcart; it represents hope, education, and the resilience of communities coming together to support their most vulnerable members. Aaliyah’s efforts have made a lasting impact on the children and families served by BYAC, empowering them to pursue brighter futures.

Inspiring Change Through Scouting

Aaliyah’s project exemplifies the transformative power of Scouting and community collaboration. Her dedication to making education more accessible to Filipino children has left a lasting legacy, proving that small acts of service can create profound change. This remarkable initiative reflects the core values of Scouting and serves as an inspiration for others to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
