Scouting America: Building Leaders and Adventures for Life

This fall, Scouting America is buzzing with excitement as it launches a membership drive to welcome girls and boys into a program designed to spark curiosity, foster leadership, and create lifelong memories. With a goal of recruiting 2,000 new members across five counties, Baltimore Area Council CEO Kenn Miller shared the program’s focus on creating family-centered opportunities that build character and life skills.

Scouting offers experiences that go beyond the traditional classroom setting. As Kenn Miller explains, Scouting gives kids the unique opportunity to develop leadership skills in real-world settings—from working on projects with their families in Cub Scouts to taking on peer leadership roles as they advance. Through activities like community service and earning merit badges, Scouts acquire skills and memories that stick with them for life.

For Scouts like Life Scout Harper Jackson and Eagle Scout Nathan Barczak, the program is much more than meetings and merit badges. Harper shared how Scouting has taught her essential communication and leadership skills, saying, “Having those leadership qualities at a young age can really impact the rest of your life.” Nathan highlighted the adventurous side, recounting his thrilling experiences of caving, rafting, and kayaking. “When I come to school, I get to say I went caving or kayaking over the weekend—things my friends only dream about,” he says.

One standout experience for Nathan was a ten-day, 120-mile trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, a transformative adventure that allowed him to meet Scouts from across the country. Harper recalled her trip to Sea Base in the Florida Keys, where she spent days sailing, scuba diving, and even camping on deserted islands.

This fall, consider giving your child the opportunity to grow, explore, and lead with Scouting America—a place where adventure meets life skills, and every weekend brings a new story to tell.
