Who is Telling the Scouting Story?
September 2024 Letter from the Scout Executive, Kenn Miller
If you are reading this Area Scouter, you are one of the thousands of parents and volunteers in the Baltimore Area Council who give of their time and resources because you have seen the positive impact the Scouting program has in the life of a child… You are a Scouting advocate!
During my career in Scouting, I have seen the challenges that the Scouting program faces in sharing the good news about Scouting in our communities and with parents of Scout age children who have no prior experience with Scouting.
At a Council level, it was time to take a new approach to marketing and this fall we have contracted with Maroon PR, based in Columbia, MD to help us connect with the local media to promote the Scouting program. As you know, the fall is our primary recruitment season for new Cub Scouts, and we have set a goal to help our nearly 200 Cub Scout Packs recruit 2,000 new youth into the Scouting program.
The first connection Maroon PR made for the Council was with Ledo’s Pizza. Through this partnership Ledo’s has committed to mailing the first 2,000 new Cub Scouts that join Scouting a certificate for a personal pan pizza at any Ledo’s restaurant in the Council. These certificates will be mailed directly to the new Cub Scouts from the Scout Service Center. In addition, Ledo’s is also providing a $50 gift certificate for a pizza party at any local Ledo’s for Cub Scout Packs that achieve their fall recruitment goal. This is a great recognition during our fall recruitment season!
We are also connecting with all the local media outlets to see how we can work together on sharing the positive impact of Scouting. This past week we had a Life Scout, a new Cub Scout and a new Cub Scout parent featured on the FOX-45 morning news.
While this Council level marketing will help in our recruitment efforts, we know the best recruitment method is peer-to-peer and through your local community organizations. Your local promotion of the Scouting program through social media, flyers, yard signs, and at community events has a big impact.
Is your unit doing something unique in marketing Scouting in your community? Please let me know. I’d love to hear about it!
Thank you all for your dedication to sharing the story of Scouting,
Kenn Miller
