Celebrating Success: Highlights from Another Outstanding Summer at Broad Creek

We’ve had another great summer camp season this year at Broad Creek. If you have ever attended one of my camp leaders’ meetings, I always talk about the three key indicators of an outstanding camp experience. First and foremost, is a diverse and committed camp staff. Second would be great program delivery and a tie for third would be good food and facilities.

We continue to make great strides in all three of these areas to ensure our Scouts and leaders are having a positive experience at Broad Creek. Frankly, I’d put our camp staff up against any other camp. They come ready to work and deliver outstanding customer service. 2024 marks the fourth year of our Camp Staff College Scholarship program. It has grown tremendously since its inception and this year, we have reached a new high with the distribution of $20,000 in college/trade school scholarships to 13 of our senior camp staff members. Through rewarding outstanding service through programs such as our Staff Scholarship, we have a staggering 83% staff retention rate year after year. Each additional summer our staff return to Broad Creek, they get better – they anticipate what the camp needs, build relationships with campers, and are equipped to provide a richer summer camp experience!

I thought I’d share a few other highlights:

  • Broad Creek had a +119 Scout attendance increase and six additional Troops attending over the previous year.
  • Scouts at Broad Creek earned a collective 2,802 Merit Badges this summer.
  • We began a new tradition of offering a professional firework show during the Fourth of July session for our Scouts and invited our Broad Creek neighbors to join us.
  • We are pleased to announce that both our Scout BSA Camp Program Director – Caleb Sullivan and Cub Scout Resident Camp Program Director – Kayla Kelly, will be returning for the 2025 season.
  • Three new comfort stations will be ready for Broad Creek’s 2025 Summer camp season. Each comfort station will have 10 single-person stalls that include a toilet, shower stall, and sink.
  • After a nationwide search, we are excited to welcome Alex Stout as our Council Camping Director. Alex’s professional Scouting background and prior camp leadership in the Mountaineer Area Council will help us build on the continued development of Broad Creek. Alex, his wife, Madison, and his two sons will be living onsite at Broad Creek starting September 1, 2024.

Broad Creek is a great small camp. We know that when we keep our attendance between 250-300 youth each week, we can provide a quality experience for all our Scouts!

If you haven’t looked into Broad Creek for your summer camp, 2025 is your year. Checkout the Broad Creek website for date/site availability and reserve your campsite today at www.BroadCreekBSA.org/Summer!
